How to Filter Used Cooking Oil / Deep Fry Oil for reuse?
Oil is a basic ingredient for any kind of food dish. We are spoiled with choices when it comes to Indian cuisine. Every day, we prepare a variety of recipes. And oil is the one ingredient that we use in all the recipes. Cooking oil is essential, whether you use it to enhance the flavor of your gravies, pan-fried anything, or deep fry those crispy nibbles. Have you noticed the microscopic particles left behind from the dishes you produce every time we cook these recipes? These particles are usually leftover batter or the skin of an ingredient that you may have fried. While most of us are unconcerned about these particles, we frequently utilize the same oil in different dishes.
Used cooking oil that has been contaminated can harm us in a variety of ways. It can cause trans-fat to form in oils, raise blood pressure, release large amounts of pollutants, and even cause the oil to become rancid. While we may not be able to replace our cooking oil daily, we can surely make it cleaner and safer to consume. So, how do you go about doing that?
Purifying the oil through filtering is no new concept.
There are many ways one can filter the oil. Two simple ways in which you can filter oils are:
1. Strain the frying oil with a coffee filter
This method takes a while and can leave the oil with a slightly “used” taste, but it is the simplest.
- Line a fine-mesh strainer with a coffee filter and place it over a large container.
- Pour oil through the filter and allow it to drain (this may require several additions of oil). Discard solids.
2. Strain the frying oil with corn-starch slurry
Adding corn starch to the oil, which attracts and traps solids for easy removal is the quickest way to clean fry oil and leaves the oil tasting clean.
- For every cup of frying oil, whisk together ¼ cup of water and 1 tablespoon of corn starch.
- Add mixture to warm or cooled oil.
- Heat the oil gently over low heat (do not let it simmer), stirring constantly with a heatproof spatula, until the starch mixture begins to solidify, 10 to 12 minutes.
- Remove oil from heat and strain through a fine-mesh strainer (or use a slotted spoon to fish out gelled mixture).

Can you reuse frying oil?
Frying oil can be reused when filtered properly but the number of times you can reuse oil is determined by the type of food you're frying - Foods that are battered or breaded, such as chicken, will deteriorate oil faster than products that are fried cleanly, such as potato chips. However, both oils can be reused at least three to four times, and in certain situations, oil can be reused up to eight times.
It's time to pitch the oil when it turns brown, smokes easily, and has a greasy stench.
Using oil in food recipes is inevitable, you can’t cut it off from your life especially if you are somebody who likes to explore different kinds of food items. But that doesn't mean that you have to compromise on your health and you can do it without wasting a lot of oil.
